"Why not? Let's do it."
"We can't! Where are we going to get all that sand?"
"It doesn't matter. We'll find a way."
"No. You'll get us in trouble."
"And you'll keep us boring forever!"
"But Hinamori... we'll get expelled."
"No we won't. Not if we ask permission first."
"The teachers aren't going to let us build a giant sand castle in the courtyard!"
"Why would we build it in the courtyard? It's not that far to Rukongai. I even know the perfect place."
"You- you really think we can build a giant sand castle?"
"Of course! Between your sand castle building skills and my kidou, it'll be the biggest one ever!"
"Why are you doing all this?"
"Because you said it was your dream. That means it's important."
"Hinamori..."
"Come on, Kira-kun. Let's go talk to Hisagi-senpai."
---
"Aoko?"
"Hinamori! What are you doing here?"
"What do you mean? I live here."
"Ah, I know. I just mean— I thought you had practice until tonight."
"Conflict with upper division practice. What are you doing?"
"I'm -ah, just... looking for something."
"Looking for what? Maybe I can help you."
"Ah, no, that's alright. I'd prefer to find it on my own."
"Are you sure? I can help."
"No, no, I'm fine."
"Why don't you want me to help?"
"It's... please, Hinamori. Just leave me alone."
"Tell me."
"No. It's personal. Now stop prying."
"So personal that you don't want me to help look for it?"
"Yes! Now go away."
"...Al-alright. But, Aoko, you- you know I'm just trying to help, right?"
Aoko sighed. "Yeah, I know. I'm sorry, Hinamori. I just— I just need to do this on my own, alright?"
"Okay. Good luck. I hope you find it quickly."
"Thanks."
---
"Why do you like him?"
"Who? Shiro-chan?"
"Yeah."
"Why- why wouldn't I like him?"
"He's... scary."
"No he's not! What are you talking about?"
"Don't you... ever just get the feeling that he could kill you by just looking at you?"
"What? What are you talking about?"
"Just what I said."
"No. I've never felt that way, ever."
A-chan just looked at her. "...Then you're stupid."
"...Why- why would you say something like that, A-chan? I thought we were friends."
"We are. But your little brother is creepy, and I don't want him coming around our house anymore. Tell him to stay away, or else we'll have to stop playing with you."
"No, I..."
"Fine. Then I guess we'll be seeing you, Hinamori."
"No, wait!"
"What?"
"I... I can't do that."
"Why not?"
"I- I just can't."
"Well that's your problem then, isn't it?"
"Please, A-chan, why are you being like this? Why can't we all just get along?"
"Yeah, Ayami, let's just go back to how things were."
"Shut up, Tecchin. I don't want that... thing coming around our house anymore. He's a fucking icicle."
"A-chan!"
"Shut. up. Hinamori."
"No! I won't let you speak that way about him! He's... he's not! He's not those things you said!"
"Whatever, Hinamori. I don't care. I like you, and I like your grandma. Just keep the creeper you live with off of my property."
"It's not even your property! You just live here, like anyone else!"
A-chan stopped, shook her head, and turned to go.
"Wait!"
"What, Hinamori?"
"...ta- take back the things you said."
"No."
"Yes!"
"NO."
"Why won't you?"
"You're a good girl, Hinamori. But you're kind of naive. You think everyone and everything is out to please you. Some of us know better. And some of us think you're going to get the people you care about hurt."
"Ayami, don't."
"Stay out of this, Tecchin. You know what I'm saying is true. She's a ditz; she thinks the whole world is a fluffy playground full of bunnies and love. Well, it's not. Sometimes people betray you. Sometimes they hurt you. And sometimes they just don't care. And someday, when you're hurt or-" She gritted her teeth. "-or *dead* because you're too stupid to have a normal fear response, I'm... going to be really sad."
Hinamori didn't know what to say to that. She frowned and cast her eyes down to the ground. When it came out, her voice was almost a whisper. "You- you're wrong, you know. About Shiro-chan. He's good, and kind, and loving..."
"Doesn't mean he won't kill you in your sleep."
"What?"
"I've seen guys like that before. They're not normal, Hinamori. They're not like you and me. You'd be smart to just move in with us like we already offered."
Hinamori couldn't help it; she began to cry.
"Fuck, Hinamori..."
"A-chan!"
"Oh, shut up. I don't care about your politeness or your righteous causes right now. Just stop crying. I'm sorry. I didn't mean what I said."
Hinamori looked up with hope. "Really?"
"Look, Hinamori. No— I really did mean what I said. I'm scared for you, living with him. He's going to hurt you. You have to get out of there. I— I'll even give you that he might be a sweet little kid or whatever, but... just trust me. He's gonna end up hurting you someday."
"You're wrong. I won't believe that about him. Ever."
"Fine. Have it your way, Momo." A-chan turned to go, then stopped. She sighed, then smiled. "Hey, Hinamori, we're gonna go down to the lake and swim later, you coming along?"
Hinamori froze in surprise, then smiled, wiping the tears from her face. "Absolutely!"
---
"It's 'cause you drink all that water, you know."
"Gosh! You scared me, Shiro-chan."
"Why do you feel the need to drink three pots of water before bed anyhow?"
"I don't drink three pots!"
"Same diff."
"I just... it makes me feel better." She twisted the cup between her hands.
He sat down beside her and looked out into the night, and then punched her arm lightly. "Stupid Momo. You don't need anything to make you feel better."
"Don't call me stupid."
"Then stop drinking all that water, Bedwetter."
"Then you stop calling me Bedwetter!" She petulantly dumped the cup of water overtop his head.
He sputtered as the cold water ran through his hair and down his back, slowly freezing as it went. "-the hell, Hinamori? I was just going to go to bed."
"Well, now you can't. See how you like it."
He sighed. "I'm going to go find a change of clothes. I better not have to wake Granny up, or you'll be sorry."
She stood with him, and went to scoop herself one last cup of water to take with her to bed, to keep beside her while she slept. That night? She didn't need it.
